The answers to these questions really depends on which sociological definition of religion you use. For example, from a substantive perspective, football would in no way be seen as a religion because it has no God or scripture or spiritual beliefs. However, from both a functionalist and a social constructionist point of view, football could be seen as a religion because it performs the function of social integration (through chanting in crowds etc)and because people are allowed to define the meaning of religion based on their personal approach
